Overview

The Marles Medal in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine (STEMM) and the Marles Medal in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) (collectively ‘The Marles Medal’) was established in 2020 to complement the Woodward Medal (est. 2001). The Marles Medal recognises excellence in research impact, which may include an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health and wellbeing, the environment or quality of life beyond academia.

Up to two Medals are awarded annually to two University of Melbourne staff in STEMM and HASS fields in recognition of the significant impact and demonstrable contribution their original research has made in the preceding ten years.

Applicants must be members of staff of the University of Melbourne at the time of their application.

Funding

The physical Marles Medals are presented to awardees during a graduation ceremony. The cash prize of $10,000 per Marles Medal is provided by DVCR strategic funds.
