Overview
Early Career Industry (IE) Fellowships aim to:
- develop the industry collaboration skills of early career researchers
- support early career researchers to achieve translatable and/or commercialisable outcomes.
Applications for the IE Fellowships (IE25) are now closed. The previous round of fellowships will support projects beginning 2025–2026.
The relevant dates for IE25 applications are listed on the Grants Calendar on the ARC website and at the top of this page.
Funding
- An IE Fellow will receive a contribution to salary and salary-related on-costs of $112,897 per year for 1–3 consecutive years on a full-time basis
- Over the length of the grant, up to $150,000 may be requested for project costs
- Successful applications can be converted to part-time fellowships, which must be 6 consecutive years or less (excluding any approved periods of suspension)
- Up to 50 IE Fellowships are awarded each round
Limits
The ARC offers the IE Fellowship alongside the Mid-Career Industry and the Industry Laureate Fellowships as part of the Industry Fellowships Program. IE Fellowships are open to researchers with less than 5 full-time years' research experience (with allowances made for career interruptions). You may submit a maximum of two IE applications over the period in which you are eligible.
You cannot apply for more than one kind of Industry Fellowship during the same year, nor hold two concurrent Industry Fellowships. You may apply for a DECRA or Future Fellowship in the same year as you apply for an IE Fellowship. However, if you are awarded both, you are permitted to accept only one.
Establishment Grants
Establishment Grants are internal grants to support IE Fellows at the University of Melbourne. These grants are funded on a 1:1 basis between your department/school/faculty and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) (DVC-R).
You should lodge your request for an Establishment Grant at the proposal stage of your IE application. Faculty-specific details on how to do this can be found here.
Industry-based researchers only working at the university as part of the fellowship are not eligible for Establishment Grants.
Request not to assess
If you have a conflict of interest with a researcher from an external institution, it is possible to request that they not be considered as a detailed assessor for your application. More details can be found on the ARC Request Not to Assess webpage.
You should not contact the ARC directly. Always speak to your faculty or RIC first.
Drop-in Sessions for IE25 and IM25 Applicants
In future rounds, RIC may again hold one-on-one consulting sessions to help you with any questions that arise while drafting your application. These sessions will allow you to troubleshoot issues with RIC staff who are familiar with the rules of the Industry Fellowship scheme and who are well placed to answer questions around eligibility and compliance with the scheme guidelines. RIC staff can follow up issues with the ARC on your behalf.
The sessions are intended to be short (15 minutes) and accessible. To book a consultation, please use the portal set up for this purpose.
How to apply
1. Submit a Notice of Intent
The Notice of Intent (NOI) should be completed early so that Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) can contact you if necessary.
2. Update RMS profile
Obtain access to the ARC Research Management System (RMS) and update your profile information (on how to do this, see RMS information).
3. Review documentation
Review the Grant Guidelines and the Instructions to Applicants.
4. Complete the draft application in RMS
Log in to RMS to complete the draft application.
5. Submit your application for review
Please note that a Qualtrics form will replace the process of emailing RIC to request feedback on your application.
If you request a RIC review using this form, two staff members will assess the application and provide you with feedback via email.
In addition to the standard review provided by RIC, a UoM ExpERT panel review led by Chancellery was offered for the IE25 round.
Using the Qualtrics form, you can opt in to any or all of the below:
- RIC compliance and eligibility review
- Written feedback from an ExpERT panel
- Zoom session with your ExpERT reviewers
If you wish to receive a compliance and eligibility review, you should attach a review-ready PDF copy of your IE25 application.
A review-ready draft should include the following:
- Part A - Administrative Summary
- Part B - Classifications/Statistical Info
- Part C - Project Eligibility
- Part D - Assessment Criteria
- Part E - Participant Details (It is important that your RMS Profile is complete, as the RMS uses this to auto-populate parts of the application)
- Part F - Project Cost
- Part G - Partner Organisation Details
6. Complete the application
After taking your review feedback into consideration, complete the application in RMS. We suggest that you also seek advice from colleagues, faculty mentors, etc, before finalising the application.
7. Submit the UOM Authority to Submit form
If the Authority to Submit form is required, it must be submitted to RIC via email: ric-arclinkage@unimelb.edu.au. This form should include:
- Head of Department certification
- Your initials next to each submission condition to confirm that it has been met
Electronic signatures are permitted.
This is an ARC requirement. Your application cannot be submitted to ARC until we receive your Authority to Submit form.
8. Submit to research office
By 10am Thursday 7 November 2024, you must have:
- Submitted your final application by clicking ‘Submit to Research Office’ in RMS.
- Emailed RIC (ric-arclinkage@unimelb.edu.au) a pdf copy of your final application and a scanned, signed Authority to Submit form.
9. RIC will submit the application on your behalf
We will email you to confirm once your application has been submitted to the ARC.
