Connecting Schools + Communities Survey

What's the survey about?

Our nationwide Connecting Schools + Communities Survey is the first of its kind in Australia. We aim to understand how and why schools share their facilities with their community – or why they don't – collecting evidence that can inform policy, design and guidelines for schools to improve community sharing and educational outcomes.

When did it happen?

We conducted the survey from late September 2021 to early August 2022, distributing it to schools via email when and where authorised (see below). In some school systems, COVID disruptions protracted the survey review process which delayed distribution so we postponed the closing date (originally end 2021).

Who participated?

We received more than 560 responses from Australian school principals, school facility managers and school leaders in wellbeing and community development.  Participation was optional. We submitted the survey to the authorities in every Australian jurisdiction and received approval to distribute it to the following schools:
ACT: Government schools, independent schools, and Catholic schools in the Canberra-Goulburn Diocese.
NSW: Government schools, independent schools, and Catholic schools in the Dioceses of Bathurst, Maitland-Newcastle Diocese, Parramatta and Wollongong.
NT: Government schools, independent schools, and all Catholic schools.
QLD: Government schools, independent schools, and Catholic schools in the Dioceses of Brisbane, Cairns, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Townsville.
SA: Government schools, independent schools, and Catholic schools in the Diocese of Adelaide and Port Pirie.
TAS: Independent schools and Catholic schools in Hobart Diocese.
VIC: Government schools, independent schools, and Catholic schools in the Dioceses of Ballarat, Melbourne, Sale and Sandhurst.
WA: Government schools, independent schools, and all Catholic schools.

What did we learn?
