Ambera Wellmann Masterclass 'A Meditation on Unknowability'

On Thursday 27 June, CoVA and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) invited Canadian artist Ambera Wellmann to conduct a masterclass with VCA Graduate students.

Wellmann’s painting practice is rooted in art historical traditions of figuration and its contemporary feminist unpacking, underpinned by a long-held interest in the uncanny, dark humour and an interest in the female reclamation of the eroticised body. Her work often brings together disparate image references, ranging from human bodies in-coitus to found porcelain objects, and is characterised by multiple layers of paint that both reveal and obscure.

Ambera's visit to Melbourne was supported by CoVA and ACCA, where her work is currently on view as part of the exhibition On Vulnerability and Doubt (29 June - 1 September).
