Jen Valender

JEN VALENDER is an Australasian artist and writer based in Narrm Melbourne. Her practice-led research investigates methods that compress complex experiences, histories and ethical dilemmas into simple gestures through projection, moving image, sculpture, and performance. She has exhibited in galleries and public spaces locally and internationally, including Bus Projects (Island Island), The Ian Potter Museum, Collingwood Yards and Abbotsford Convent.

In 2019, Valender was the recipient of Next Wave’s New Precinct Award and the Ian Potter Museum’s Miegunyah Research Project Award. In 2020, she was an artist in residence at the Centre for Projection Art, exhibiting works for Light Windows hosted by the HoloCentre, New York, and the Centre of Visual Art (CoVA). Her work recently featured in the Gertrude Street Projection Festival, Melbourne and Spier Light Art 2021, Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Valender has presented work and written for Art Almanac, and Trouble Magazine, as well as the Volumes of Mutual Aid and Currents art journals. She has edited books and articles for the publishing house John Wiley & Sons and the North & West Melbourne News. For the past five years, Valender has specialised in academic editing services for fine arts master’s and doctoral theses.
