Clare Rae

Graduate Academy Member 2020, 2021

Clare Rae is an artist and current PhD candidate in visual art at the VCA. Her practice engages performance and gesture within the photographic field to present an alternate and often awkward experience of subjectivity and the female body, usually the artist’s own.

Her PhD project examines archives and collections of feminist Australian photographers, proposing a contemporary visualisation and critique of the impacts of authoritative space on the female body: institutions, landscapes, public and private place.

Known for her engagement with domestic and institutional architectures, recently Clare’s work has been captured and exhibited in locations such as the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), RMIT University, the National Gallery of Victoria, Monash University, the Abbotsford Convent, Sutton Project Space and the Substation, Melbourne.
