Dr. Simon Maidment is Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. He is responsible for a curatorial department working across Australian and International contemporary art; collecting and programming at the country’s best-attended public art museum with an annual attendance of 3.2 million. His recent curatorial projects at the NGV include group shows such as the inaugural NGV Triennial, Lurid Beauty: Australian Surrealism and its Echoes, and Melbourne Now; single-artist retrospectives focussed on artists such as Julian Opie, David Hockney and the Australian retrospectives Gareth Sansom: Transformer and David McDiarmid: When this you see remember me; and projects by international artists Carsten Hӧller, Lizzie Fitch & Ryan Trecartin, Richard Mosse and Subodh Gupta. Maidment trained as a media-based artist, with a practice involving collaboration, curating and writing. He completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne using curatorial practice to consider the relationship of art to political change, and the critical possibilities for agency in this relationship.
