Raafat Ishak is Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts and a practising visual artist. His practice spans painting, sculpture and installation. Individual exhibitions include Chicken River, Gertrude contemporary, 2018, 1977, Sutton Gallery, 2017, Nomination for the presidency of the new Egypt, Sutton Gallery, 2012, Recipes for aversion and strategy, the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne, 2010 and Responses to an immigration request from one hundred and ninety four governments, Sutton Gallery, 2009. Raafat was included in Melbourne Now, 2014, National gallery of Victoria, Safar/ Voyage at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in 2013. The Other’ Other at Artspace in Sydney, 2012. The Venice Biennale’s Future of a promise, 2011. New 010 at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial at the Queensland Art Gallery – Gallery of Modern Art, and Cubism & Australian Art at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, all in 2010. He has been awarded a number of Australia Council grants including residency at the Cite International des Arts in Paris in 2013 and is a founding member of Ocular Lab Inc in Melbourne.
