5 JULY: Workshop Macarena Gómez-Barris

On July 5, 2019 we were pleased to invite early career and graduate researchers to join South American queer and decolonial scholar Dr Macarena Gómez-Barris for a workshop at Buxton Contemporary.

Dr Macarena Gómez-Barris has engaged extensively with the work of artists, ecologists and activists such as Cecilia Vicuña, Carolina Caycedo, Francisco Huichaqueo, YASunidos, Raul Zurita, Regina Galindo and others to emphasise the way creative practices can participate in the social in empowering and alternative ways.

In this workshop, Dr Gómez-Barris presented her thinking on artistic imaginaries and the potential of transfeminism. Participants were invited to discuss their own work and thinking on these and related topic and included graduate researchers in the fields of queer studies, visual art, filmmaking, activism, environmental humanities and others engaging with questions of transfeminism, artistic imaginaries, decolonisation indigeneity, queer/feminism and those concerned with how art can challenge the toxic and corrosive logics of racial and extractive capitalism.
