About Honiara’s challenge

Waste, particularly plastic waste, is a significant environmental and human health challenge in Honiara and Solomon Islands. There is limited recycling (only aluminum cans) and no regulatory controls on the use of plastic bags and bottles. The landfill is rapidly filling up and many people burn rubbish (including plastic and organic waste) which has associated health effects.

Our challenge is to reduce waste to landfill significantly; reduction of plastic bag usage in city markets; better waste management systems in settlements, particularly informal settlements.

Alignment to SDG11

Goal 11.3: Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanisation and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.

Goal 11.6: Reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
