About City of Newcastle

Newcastle at a glance

Nestled on the beautiful, sun-drenched eastern coastline of New South Wales, just over two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is a vibrant city bursting with things to do, places to stay and fun to be had.

City of Newcastle is located on the traditional country of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and continuing relationship with the land, and that they are proud survivors of more than 200 years of dispossession.

Spectacular beaches and coastal scenery, with ocean baths and some of the country’s best surfing spots, are only just the start. We have museums and art galleries, rich history and architecture to keep the most ardent culture vultures intrigued. Then there’s a dedication to coffee, a thriving bar and restaurant scene, and on-trend designer shops and artisan markets.

City of Newcastle’s Challenge

Our vision for the city is that in 2030, Newcastle will be a smart liveable and sustainable global city.

We continue to work towards this vision and an important part of that is the meaningful attainment of the SDGs. For this Cities Challenge Project, we are taking on the challenge of integrating the SDG 11 indicators into our own indicator framework in order for us to measure, report and monitor our action in the SDG into the future.

The City of Newcastle is currently undertaking a review of our indicator framework which underpins what we report on and what we monitor. We wish to build a more comprehensive, transparent and accurate indicator framework. Localising and including the indicators in SDG11 will ensure that our organisation will act on the targets and will report on it.  This will be an essential process to establish and then can be rolled out for all of the SDGs.

We are not more aligned to any of the targets but to the SDG 11 in general as we hope to implement all the indicators which apply to the City of Newcastle context.
