Centre Fellows

The principal aim of the Melbourne Centre for Cities is to foster cities research in and from Melbourne, with a principal focus on questions of urban governance and an explicitly international viewpoint. A key ingredient to achieving this mission is a committed, multi-disciplinary and engaged community of Centre Fellows forming the Centre’s core team of scholars and practitioners.

Fellows can be permanent or fixed-term academic staff at the University, at level A and above, current honorary fellows at the University. Researchers currently undertaking doctoral studies can instead join this core team as part of the Centre Doctoral Group. Fellows are recognised formally as members of the Centre’s core team and community and will take a proactive role in its academic life.

Centre Fellows are University of Melbourne staff who hold a role appointed either directly through the Melbourne Centre for Cities, or who make a formal commitment to dedicate a specific section of their working time to Centre duties. Fellows are recognised to formally engage in the Centre’s academic life as part of its core team; upholding its mission and activities within the Centre, with external partners, and across campus.

Fellows operate within the specifics of their underpinning role’s responsibilities compliant as per University and host Faculty guidance. They are recognised in Centre materials and activities and are typically provided either with dedicated space or access to Centre offices and are engaged directly in career development, outreach and other core Centre programs.

Centre Fellows are provided by the Centre with a variety of support and activities and are in turn expected to play a significant part in its work and development. Fellows partake directly in Centre development programs (e.g. for early career academics) and exchange or workshop activities (e.g. centre seminar series) along with the specific duties in their Fellowship role (e.g. as a postdoctoral researcher or as Centre leadership), leading in organising Centre projects and events like faculty forums or the university symposium, facilitated external and international engagements, and more.

Applications for Centre Fellowship are managed in collaboration with the Fellow’s relevant academic division and require a completed application form, including an endorsement from a supervisor or head of department confirming the Fellow’s capacity to commit reasonable time to engage in Centre activities on a regular basis as part of their overall University of Melbourne duties.

While a key part of the Centre mission is to support Early and Mid-Career urban scholars, applications from all disciplines and at all levels of seniority are welcomed. We particularly encourage diversity and welcome candidates from under-represented minorities.

Assessment of applications is focused on the strength of the case by considering the articulation of current or prospective engagement with Centre projects and staff, as well as the Fellow’s commitment to research on cities and city governance.

Please note: While you can submit an EOI at any time, we only conduct intakes twice annually: in February and August.
